Understanding Semester GPA (SGPA) vs. Cumulative GPA (CGPA)

Semester GPA (SGPA) represents the average grade earned across courses taken in a single term or semester. Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the weighted average of all your courses and semesters from your freshman year through graduation.

Because terms often have different numbers of credit hours (e.g. 18 credits in Fall vs 12 credits in Spring), your cumulative GPA cannot be found by simply averaging your SGPAs. Each term’s SGPA must be weighted by its credit count:

Cumulative College GPA = Σ(Semester SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) / ΣTotal Degree Credit Hours
